excessively bored here (so feel free to use this as a party post) but i know that a few months ago i tipsily scrawled my ideas for challenges somewhere in Most Recent Notebook. yup, found 'em.
edit new comm layout
last_pleasure. still need to clean up a few things. stylesheets from
refuted. (yup, i'm that bored.)
2007.02.19 (Monday 19 February 2007) through 2007.03.05 (Monday 5 March 2007) your time.
That's a whole fortnight & I'm starting with a bang.
♠ oo1. Behind the Airbrushing
This challenge is specifically in regards to manufactured pop groups (example: Hello! Project, Johnny's Entertainment, SM Entertainment, etc.). Not a fan? Doesn't matter. Members of groups from these companies are cardboard cutouts designed especially to be typecast as their alter egos. Everything you need to work with is right there on the surface, now all you have to do is dig. If you need suggestions, ask!
Consider: blue screens, an indoor environment, makeup, overexposed lighting, pitch-correction software, airbrushing, group psychology, etc.
Limitation: try to keep it manufactured and pop. Otherwise I might just fail you!
♠ oo2. Makeover
That's right, "makeover", and that's all you're getting. I want variations on a theme. I want you to take it and brainstorm your way to the very murky edge of the prompt. This is a great way to explore appearance and sacrifice.
Limitation: must, must, must be creative. I'm NOT asking for "Miyavi discusses tomorrow's hairstyle".
♠ oo3. 3-part, 3-POV, each narrator is lying
You have one event, three people, each of them with contrary views of what happened. You can structure this as you like, but three separate parts (each revealing a little more or less), one for each narrator, may be best.
Considerations: perspective is the key to this. 1st person is a very difficult perspective to pull off, while 2nd person frequently relies on formulaic syntax/language and this challenge is going to be damn hard using an omniscient voice. Perhaps the most helpful hint I can offer is the unreliability of memory — try past tense, if you're stuck experiment with AU or try writing 3 police reports or affidavits.
♠ oo4. Songfic, Sting & Eric Clapton's "It's Probably Me"
Resources: Download (ask if in need of re-up); Lyrics; Billboard Article
Limitation: I want to see a new spin on 'songfic'. Try referencing the lyrics without inserting them.
Feeling adventurous? Try this in tandem with #6.
♠ oo5. Cross-Culture Mash-Up
Take this as you will — it could be a Chinese/Japanese affair, Korean/Chinese, Japanese/Korean, American/Japanese, even an exploration of mixed genealogy. It could occur in neither place, one, or both.
Considerations: start with your own culture: it's what you know best. But remember that our culture is often invisible to us so make sure you do not impose it on another. (No more than globalization may've already done so.)
Limitation: Do NOT. I repeat. DO NOT take this challenge if you don't understand the concept of 'culture'[see: detailed defn; shorter defn; wikipedia], and especially do not take this challenge if you don't have a good knowledge base in regards to the cultures involved. If I see any Orientalism [see: 1, 2] you will beshot punished.
♠ oo6. Exploring Male Friendship — The Fine Line
Pretty self-explanatory, every good fanfic writer knows how to exploit this. What does this casual touch mean that this one doesn't? How close is dangerously close? You get the idea.
Further Prompt: you must remember this, a kiss is just a kiss. As Time Goes By (download the Dooley Wilson (Casablanca Soundtrack) version).
Limitation: avoid feminising male characters.
♠ oo7. Drunkfic
You don't need to be drunk. Join in on the everlasting party post.
♠ oo8. Talent
Specifically an audition or casting. What distinguishes who? Sexual favours? Looks over ability?
I have a feeling this is going to be hard for anyone who hasn't auditioned for something before, or at least performed once or twice, so if you fall into that category make sure you have a good basis for any assumptions you make about the process. I've seen this written without any regard to reality far too often.
♣ Wildcard. Fanfiction Classics
They make us cringe. Often. But the truth is when these are done well they can be very effective. Here are some examples:
Drinking Games 'I never...', Spin the Bottle, kissing games, drinking competitions, etc. I know I'm guilty of using these!
Clubbing if you've never been to a club except through a music video this isn't for you. Try not to romanticise.
High School AU can this be done well? I'm not so sure, but you're welcome to try.
Dubious Consent I quail at putting this here, and warn you to be VERY. VERY careful with it. Go to the emotion behind the act. Put yourself in the victim AND the abuser's shoes.
Et cetera (feel free to suggest additions) — you get the idea, right?
Limitations: obviously, if you make ANY
last_pleasure reader cringe, you're out.
(beyond the perfect grammar and spelling I am expecting of all of you!)
♣ Syntax. Don't get too tied up about it, but I've been seeing too many over-punctuated run-on sentences. Full stops do not diminish the impact of a given paragraph. Really. They don't.
♣ Tautologies. Simply: clutter. Get rid of "words that unnecessarily repeat what you've said". (John Marsden, Everything I Know About Writing, Pan Mac., Australia: 2004.)
♣ Show, Don't Tell. If the reader can infer it, DON'T TELL THEM. Let us interact with the story.
♣ Use your imagination but remember to refer back to what you know. Even fantasy has to obey certain rules. What is fanfiction if not the ultimate challenge at duplicating something real while twisting it to conform to your own fantasies? Don't ignore the fact that so-and-so is flagrantly homophobic, use it.
You have an entire fortnight before the round ends, and basically forever if you can't finish it in time, I'll accept any sort of fiction, fannish or otherwise.
These challenges are meant to be TOUGH. If you'd like some simpler prompts I'm more than happy to offer them, but I might order a few limitations on them. If you'd like me to challenge YOU specifically to try something new I'll come up with something special JUST FOR YOU (just get in before the 26th, please). If you need examples, I will endeavour to provide them!
What do I mean when I say I'll fail you? Well, fulfil the prompt & you won't have to worry about that!
Brainstorm, talk, comment! Join in! You don't need to be a maintainer to participate.
NEW-COMERS? Remember to introduce yourselves! Please don't be shy, we love tocorrupt party hear new opinions/discussion/thoughts. And maintainers, remember you can invite other writers.
How do you participate? Simple — write to a prompt and post the fic. Comment on this entry linking to your challenge fic once it's been posted at your ficjournal (or whereever you post fic). A summary is posted once the round is complete.
If you finish the prompt within the timeframe you can request from me! O: Take a look at my profile post and give me a challenge as cruel as what I've given you! You know you want to ;D
TAGGING:who wants it? SPEAK NOW.

Date: 2007-02-19 11:49 am (UTC)The idea of failing is scary, you better not fail me~!
I should probably go post my profile now.
no subject
Date: 2007-02-19 09:18 pm (UTC)it might be hard to do anything too different with it? come on, be creative! despite how obvious the prompt might be, few people tend to write it (realistically) and few people tend to pull it off.
i'll try not to XDDDDD!
no subject
Date: 2007-02-19 09:26 pm (UTC)Yeah, that's true but, you know how it is, often the first thing you think of (just like the first track you love on an album) isn't always the best in the long run. I had an obvious idea and I can't think of many ways of being especially creative with it so it might be better to try something else. Can you try multiple prompts, by the way?
OK. Good. XD
no subject
Date: 2007-02-19 09:44 pm (UTC)and yup, you can try as many prompts as you want, in whatever combination you like :)

Date: 2007-02-19 03:33 pm (UTC)Oh, and just out of curiosity: when you say avoid feminising male characters what do you mean by it? I mean, what is feminising male characters? Is there some basic rules, such as 'males don't do this' and 'males do that'? I've been thinking about this for a while already because for me it's a subject that doesn't have one right answer.
no subject
Date: 2007-02-19 09:37 pm (UTC)well unfortunately, there are no rules, there is no list or right answer. what i mean in this instance is to avoid making characters in your own image. the most important thing is not to forget that the characters are male, and may react differently to a given situation because of this.
maybe reading up on gender (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender) would help?

Date: 2007-02-19 04:04 pm (UTC)... I kinda really, really wanna try to write to some of these prompts yet.. *meep* You scare me. T_T What if I'm not good enough~?
Umm.. 001. and 002. made me more or less confused (I didn't quite get the idea of the prompt) so those are pretty much out.. As well as 005. :p
And.. Um, I'm not sure if it was what you were aiming for, but why does prompt 008. make me think of "Jrock goes American Idol"? o_O
no subject
Date: 2007-02-19 09:40 pm (UTC)tell me what confuses you and i'll try to clear it up :)
XD i really wasn't thinking of that. i recently watched Battle Shinhwa and i guess it reminded me of the audition process :D i'm not entirely sure how it'd fit into jrock, but i wanted to have some prompts that went a little beyond jrock. still, for an indie band, recording demos and sending them out to labels is sort of like an audition.

Date: 2007-02-19 10:04 pm (UTC)...
I don't think I'll try it, though but.. <.<
Why is my mind conjuring up something Ryuutarou/Full inclined from 006.?no subject
