well unfortunately, there are no rules, there is no list or right answer. what i mean in this instance is to avoid making characters in your own image. the most important thing is not to forget that the characters are male, and may react differently to a given situation because of this. maybe reading up on gender (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender) would help?
